In 2018, I photographed people moving through Central London, absorbed in their phones and increasingly connected to a world beyond the one immediately around them. At the time I was becoming frustrated by the feeling of competing with a screen for someone’s attention, even in the middle of a conversation. I started photographing that strange tension between being together and being elsewhere.
